Programs
Our Youth Advisory Committee will provide a voice for the youth in the program. The Advisory Committee will allow a group of teen girls to meet monthly to collaborate their ideas and to contribute to the planning process of the program.
Mentoring Matters© pairs positive female mentors in the community with adolescent and teenage girls. The mentors volunteer to spend one-on-one quality time with the young ladies on a regular basis in a secure environment while ensuring that the young ladies receive the best opportunities in life. One-on-one mentoring is available upon request. All mentors are required to undergo a criminal background check.
Real Rap Sessions for Teen Girls Only© will serve as a communication tool for middle and high school girls to meet once a month at various locations through out the community, to discuss important topics such as self-esteem, self-respect, body image, dating and date violence, peer pressure and other topics pertinent to teenage girls. Real Rap sessions provide a supportive, safe environment for young ladies to openly share with their peers and to help each other find solutions to everyday issues that occur in every young girl’s life. Guest speakers are also invited and encouraged to help the young ladies identify realistic and achievable approaches to dealing with various issues they may face during their adolescent and teenage years. (See calendar for location and times)
Our Sister’s Exchange© is a community outreach program, that’s driven by the Youth Advisory Committee, who solicit and collect new and “almost new” clothing, shoes, and accessories; as well as care packages (personal essentials) that are donated and distributed to disadvantage girls throughout the Tampa Bay area. For donations, contact us at (727) 422-0007 or email: mdkyouth@mdktampabay.org
Read and Express “R&E” Book Talk is a monthly book discussion, based on empowering books that may relate to the lives and struggles of teenage girls. During discussion time, the teens will be able to talk about how the books and characters relate to their lives and how issues and situations could have been handled differently. “R&E” Book Talk will give the teens a chance to develop their literacy skills as well as allow them to discuss their feelings and thoughts about different books and how they relate to true life.
The R&E Book Club will meet once a month at Barnes and Noble “Tyrone location” and various libraries. (See calendar for location and times)
The Caregivers Connection© is a monthly networking and support group for mothers and caregivers raising adolescent and teenage daughters. The mothers and caregivers will come together and address specific issues pertaining to their daughters in a supportive, non-judgmental, and interactive environment. This will empower them to work together to identify realistic and achievable solutions to problems that their daughters are confronted with in their daily lives. (See calendar for location and times)
“Straight Talk” Newsletter for Teen Girls will be issued to teen girls as a form of communication between female role models and young ladies making a difference in their community through academic, community service, volunteer work, etc. Also, this newsletter will feature young ladies who have made a significant turn around in their life.
